Your ice machine has stopped producing ice — or it's making significantly less than usual. For a restaurant or bar in Calgary, this can bring service to a halt. Before you panic, let's walk through the most common causes and what you can do.
1. Dirty Condenser Coils
This is the #1 reason ice machines underperform. When condenser coils get clogged with dust, grease, and kitchen debris, the machine can't release heat properly. The compressor works harder, the cycle takes longer, and ice production drops — sometimes to zero.
What to do: If you can see the coils (usually on the back or underneath), check if they're visibly dirty. Regular cleaning every 3-4 months prevents this issue entirely. This is one of the key things we check during a maintenance visit.
2. Water Supply Problems
Ice machines need a steady flow of water. A kinked water line, partially closed valve, or clogged water filter will reduce or stop ice production. In Calgary, hard water is common and mineral buildup in the water line can restrict flow over time.
What to do: Check that the water supply valve is fully open. If you have a water filter, check when it was last replaced — most need changing every 6 months.
3. Scale and Mineral Buildup
Calgary's water is hard, which means calcium and lime deposits build up inside the ice machine's evaporator, water lines, and distribution tubes. This is a top cause of slow production and cloudy or oddly shaped ice.
What to do: Professional descaling is recommended at least twice a year for Calgary businesses. This involves running a food-safe descaling solution through the system and thoroughly rinsing it.
4. Ambient Temperature Too High
Ice machines are rated for specific ambient temperatures. If your machine is next to a hot oven, in a poorly ventilated area, or in a kitchen that runs over 38°C, it will struggle to produce ice efficiently. Calgary summers can push kitchen temperatures high enough to cause problems.
What to do: Make sure there's adequate clearance around the machine (at least 6 inches on all sides) and that kitchen ventilation is working properly. Consider our commercial HVAC services if your kitchen ventilation needs attention.
5. Mechanical Failure
If none of the above apply, you may be looking at a compressor issue, a faulty thermostat, a refrigerant leak, or a failed water inlet valve. These require a trained technician to diagnose and repair.
When to Call a Professional
If you've checked the basics (water supply, visible cleanliness, ambient temperature) and the machine still isn't producing, it's time to call. The longer an ice machine runs in a failed state, the more strain it puts on the compressor — which can turn a small repair into an expensive one.
At YYC Mechanical, we repair all major ice machine brands including Hoshizaki, Manitowoc, Scotsman, and Ice-O-Matic. We offer 24/7 emergency service across Calgary and surrounding areas.
