Reach-in coolers and freezers work harder than almost anything else in a commercial kitchen. The doors open hundreds of times a day, they often sit next to the line, and nobody notices them until they stop holding temperature. When one fails, the first question is whether to fix it or buy a new one.
Repairs that are usually worth doing
Many reach-in problems are common, quick repairs on a unit that still has plenty of life left:
- Door gaskets and hinges: a torn gasket or sagging door lets warm air in all day. See signs of a bad reach-in door gasket.
- Fan motors: a failed evaporator or condenser fan can make the box warm up even though the compressor is running.
- Thermostat or controller: a faulty control can let the box run too warm, or run so cold it freezes product.
- Dirty condenser coil: grease and dust on the coil make the unit run hot and struggle. Cleaning it is routine maintenance, not a major repair.
Signs replacement may make more sense
- Compressor failure on an older unit: on a reach-in that is 10 years old or more, a new compressor can cost a large share of a new unit.
- Refrigerant leaks that keep coming back: topping up refrigerant is not a fix. If a leak can't be found and repaired properly, the costs keep adding up.
- Rusted or damaged cabinet: if the cabinet, floor or door frames are failing, new parts on the inside won't solve the real problem.
- It never quite keeps up: a unit that runs constantly and still sits a few degrees warm during service may simply be too small or too worn for the job.
A simple way to decide
Compare the repair price with the cost of a new unit, and factor in the unit's age. A modest repair on a unit under about 8 years old is usually worth it. A major repair on a unit that is 10 years or older deserves a quote for replacement too. Our guide to commercial refrigeration repair costs in Calgary gives a sense of typical prices.
Before you buy new
- Measure the space, including clearance for air around the unit. Reach-ins pushed tight into a hot corner fail early.
- Check whether it needs to be a cooler, a freezer, or a dual-temp unit for how the station actually works.
- Plan where product goes during the swap, and give the new unit time to reach temperature before loading it.
Protect your product in the meantime
If a reach-in is warming up right now, move product to another cooler and keep the door closed. Our restaurant fridge breakdown checklist covers the first steps while you wait for a technician.
